Careful What You Hear by Helen Dunlap Newton #Review #Giveaway

Today I am featuring a Middle Grade book aimed at 10-15 year olds: Careful What You Hear. This adventure sci- fi novel by Helen Dunlap Newton, will be published by Yorkshire Publishing on February 25th. I also have a great giveaway and the chance to win a $15 IndieBound e-gift card (US 0nly). Details on how to enter are at the foot of this post.

After a surgical mix-up gave 13-year-old Noah Baker mind reading powers, he becomes a spy tasked with stopping the bad guys.

Ever since he accidentally got an experimental cochlear implant, Noah and his secret agent partner, Lena, have been going on secret missions for the government. Now, they’re in for a reward for all their hard work—Space Camp! But all is not as it seems. When Noah accidentally overhears thoughts that reveal a plot to steal top secret plans from nearby Redstone Arsenal, he must make a choice.

This adventure story is a sequel to Do You Hear What I Hear? but it can be read as a standalone. It deals with issues around disability in a sensitive manner, making the two central characters part of this message. Noah has a cochlear implant and Lena has issues around mobility. However, they both have other talents and a positive attitude. They undertake undercover work for the government so are quite special young people.

What struck me first about the story was the pace of the writing. Young readers will enjoy its fast  turn of events. The friendship between Noah and Lena is sparky and adds humour to the story as they navigate their friendship amid the challenges they face. They feel like a team. Above all. I liked the positive underlying message of facing up to difficulties. Their disabilities give them additional challenges but they press on and make the best, overcoming obstacles and staying true to themselves.

Cat and Mouse say: evetyone is included!
