This is a mystery story with a dose of time travelling fantasy which will appeal to young readers, especially those at the older end of the target readership of ages 5-9. Divided into short chapters, the story is not too complicated but has a range of characters. Set during the recent pandemic, it references some of the restrictions which were in place as they would have affected young children and Emily is filled with apprehension about the future and unsure in cramped conditions. She is lonely and missing her friends and father. This element is written with a broad brush, just in the background.
The Grubblers have been displaced from their woodland habitat through the actions of men, building and cutting down the environment. Young children will be able to see the effect of building on the less powerful and there is a nice message on living alongside others with consideration. You also see the story through different characters eyes which adds variety to a delightful story.
