The Boy Who Breathed underwater by Izzy Rees illustrated by Sarah-Leigh Wills #Ewview

The Boy Who Breathed Underwater by Izzy Rees is a lovely picture book which is aimed at children aged 4- 8. It was published by Full Media Ltd on 24th September. This is the 1st book in 'The Boy Who' series.

When lying in his bed, a boy is visited by a genie. He is given a week to try out different superhero powers. What adventures will he have, and which power will he choose to keep?

This is a colourful and engaging picture book which will appeal to young readers and pre-schoolers. Written in verse, it will lend itself particularly to being read aloud and shared with an adult. There are opportunities for the reader to adopt different voices to entertain. Children will have fun thinking about which superpower they would like to have and why. They can also see the downsides of something they thought they would love and in the end there is a reassuring message about being yourself. There is some humour in some of the powers the boy tried out and I liked the ending where the genie flew on to question another child. This leaves an open-ended aspect to the tale and a chance to discuss 'What happens next?'

About the Author

Izzy Rees was born in West London, but has spent the last thirty years living in Derby. Ten years ago, when her three girls were young, she began work on a series of rhyming picture books, created in snatched moments, and initially written on small scraps of paper or whatever was available. She always intended to revisit them, and Covid and lockdown presented the opportunity; unable to continue her work as a neurophysiotherapist, working with vulnerable patients, she decided it was now or never! She has written six books so far in the ‘The Boy Who’ series, The Boy Who Breathed Underwater being the first one. The others will be published in the near future.
